Welcome to Garden Decor
Whereas in the past people used their gardens to grow flowers and vegetables, as a place for children to play and for sitting out in occasionally, now the garden often has to fulfill another function and be an extension of the house. It’s become a new living area and many home-owners are now looking to use garden decor to beautify their gardens just as they also decorate their home’s interior.
Gardens can of course range in size from a small window box or half barrel planted with flowers to a huge area larger than the house itself. However big or small your garden is, there are garden decor items to enhance it and make it a pleasant place to spend time.
Garden decoration can be overwhelming at first. If you visit a large garden center or depot, the choice is immense and it can be hard to know where to start. We hope here to provide help for you to start planning your lawn and garden decor so you create an attractive, integrated area, enhanced by your individual choice of garden accessories, lighting and outdoor furniture.
As in your home, where you plan where to place your largest pieces of furniture first, your garden design should proceed in the same way. You want your new pieces to look as if they have always been there, so they need to be planned carefully into your overall garden design. Anyone can buy a bird feeder and stick in the ground, but have you considered whether you can see it from the house in winter or whether it will be uncomfortably (and messily!) close to your seating area?
We will be looking at overall garden design and then at the different elements of decor you can use and where best to place them. We will be considering items such as the bird feeder (does it need to be squirrel-proof in your area, for example?) and bird baths, water elements such as fountains and ponds, outdoor furniture such as garden benches and patio furniture, purely decorative items like garden statues and wind chimes, and one of the most important elements both inside and out – garden lighting.
